Middlesex County Celebrates National Adoption Day
NOVEMBER 19, 2009 – Sixteen families were formed or expanded Nov. 19 as adoption procedures for 23 children were finalized at the Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick.
New Jersey Superior Court Judge Robert P. Figarotta presided over the proceedings, which unfolded as a reception, honoring the families and recognizing National Adoption Day took place just outside.
Surrogate Kevin J. Hoagland, whose office facilitates the adoption process in Middlesex County, said the national event is held to raise awareness about the more than 114,000 children across the country in foster care waiting for permanent homes.
“We are very happy to participate in this national event,” said Hoagland, whose office works with the State Superior Court, judges, attorneys and advocates to finalize adoptions. Hoagland said the County processes between 175 and 200 adoptions each year.
“Today, 23 children were adopted; 16 families were created or expanded,” Hoagland said. “It’s a happy day, and we’re hoping that by highlighting the process, we are opening doors for many other families to be formed.”
The event was co-sponsored by the Middlesex County Bar Association.
“In our third year of existence, I am once again thrilled at being an integral part of this most happy occasion in the Middlesex County Courthouse,” said Louis J. R. Kady, Middlesex County Bar Association.
“As someone elected to serve the people of Middlesex County, I am thrilled to be here today. But it is as a mother and a grandmother that I extend my sincerest congratulations to the parents who stand before me,” said Freeholder Mildred S. Scott, chair of the County’s Law and Public Safety Committee.
“Parenthood may be the toughest job in the world, but I consider it the greatest experience life has to offer. Thank you for coming out today to help Middlesex County celebrate National Adoption Day. I hope that what we do here today will encourage others to take these steps ”
