Middlesex County Purchases Land
in Perth Amboy for Recreation Facilities
MARCH 7, 2014 – The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders at its regular meeting last night approved the purchase of 5.9 acres in the City of Perth Amboy, directly across the street from the Perth Amboy campus of the Middlesex County Vocational-Technical School system.
“This represents the first ever purchase of open space within the City of Perth Amboy,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Carol Barrett Bellante, liaison to the County’s Open Space and Recreation Advisory Committee. “It also will enable the County to build state-of-the art active recreational facilities to be used by the students of the Perth Amboy campus, the entire community and Middlesex County residents at large.”
“This purchase and our plans to create top-notch recreational facilities will raise the already high quality of education at our Perth Amboy Vocational School,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “It also will bring brand new facilities to the northeastern part of our county, fulfilling our mission to provide excellent facilities to all our residents.”
Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz, an advocate of the project said: “I am really excited to have this partnership with the County. The City of Perth Amboy is in dire need of Open Space and this property has been a vacant eyesore for the past 20 years. Now, our residents and the residents of Middlesex County will have new grounds and facilities to help them stay fit and healthy, as they enjoy historic Perth Amboy and our beloved waterfront area. Middlesex County’s parks have always been well utilized and provide a broad range of recreational activities for all. I am extremely grateful to the Freeholders and the County for creating this initiative.”
The $5.15 million purchase was achieved with County Open Space and Recreation Trust Funds. The purchase also will improve waterfront access to the Arthur Kill.
The land is consistent with other properties included in the City’s redevelopment plans to restore the waterfront and create public access to the marina and recreational facilities to the Arthur Kill and the Raritan Bay.
“Creating new and exciting recreational opportunities and improving access to our waterways are priorities when we set out to build new facilities,” Barrett Bellante said. “This one purchase reaches both goals.”
