Bystander wounded; one killed in shooting

††††††††† Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced that a city man died this morning following a weekend shooting in which he, another man, and an innocent bystander were wounded.

Rahim Fuqua, 30, of New Brunswick, was pronounced dead at 2:45 a.m. today at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was taken after he was shot outside his home on Seaman Street in New Brunswick on March 1, 2014.

The results of an autopsy by the Middlesex County Medical Examinerís Office were not immediately available.

Also wounded were the bystander, identified as a 34-year-old city resident, and a South Brunswick man, who has been charged with two counts of hindering police during their investigation into the shooting.

Bail has been set at $500,000 for Christian A. Peguero (DOB 8/28/88) of the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the right leg.

The bystander, who was in a parked minivan when he was wounded, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and was released after he was treated for a gunshot wound to his left arm.

††††††††† Fuqua was shot when an undisclosed number of men opened fire and fled in a vehicle at 3:25 p.m.

The investigation by Detective Brandt Gregus of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Jeffrey Temple of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office determined that Peguero was among the group that fired upon Fuqua.

The investigation further determined that Fuqua was the intended target of the shooting, which was not a random act.

Fuqua, who was found on his front steps, was armed with a handgun, but it appeared that the weapon had not been fired.

It also was noted that the house where Fuqua resided has been the scene of prior police investigations.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Gregus of the New Brunswick Police Department at (732) 745-4217, or Investigator Temple of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office at (732) 745-3373.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges filed against Peguero are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
