Carteret man charged with murder

 

 

          Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Carteret Police Chief John Pieczyski today announced that a borough man has been arrested and charged with fatally shooting another borough man and wounding a 17-year-old male.

 

          Edward L. Burton (DOB 2/14/89) of Carteret was arrested at 3:17 a.m. today after being charged on June 30, 2010 with the murder of  Devon Mbachu, 19, also of Carteret.

 

Burton also was charged with the attempted murder of the 17-year-old male who was wounded when Mr. Mbachu was shot outside his home on June 22, 2010.

 

In addition, Burton was charged with possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and possession of a handgun without a permit.

 

He remained in custody after bail was set at $2 million by Superior Court Judge Bradley Ferencz, who ruled the defendant must post the full amount before he can be released from custody.

 

Burton was arrested by police when they saw him at the corner of Locust Street and Washington Avenue in Carteret.

 

He was arrested following an investigation by Detective Sgt. Raymond Novak and Detective Larissa Berrios, both of the Carteret Police Department, and Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

 

The investigation began after police were alerted to the shooting by a 911 call at 11:52 a.m. on June 22, 2010.

 

Police arrived to find the two victims outside Mr. Mbachu’s home on Lowell Street in the borough.

 

The 17-year-old male, whose identity is being withheld, was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and Mr. Mbachu was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway, where he died on June 23, 2010.
