Cause of death awaits further testing

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced today that additional tests will be undertaken to supplement the results of an autopsy that has been performed in an effort to determine the cause of death for a 17-month-old boy who was under the supervision of a day care center in Perth Amboy.

The tests will be conducted by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office, which performed the autopsy on May 18, 2010.

The child, a Carteret resident whose name is being withheld, was pronounced dead at 11:22 a.m. on May 17, 2010, at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy.

An investigation by the Perth Amboy Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office began after police received a 911 call at 10:35 a.m. on May 17, 2010, from Maggie’s Little School, a day care center on Parker Street in Perth Amboy.

Police arrived and attempted to revive the child, who was taken to the city hospital.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Ralph Cruz of the Perth Amboy Police Department at (732) 442-4400, or Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-4471.
