Charges filed following New Brunswick shooting



Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced today that a 26-year-old North Brunswick man has been charged with three weapons offenses following a shooting on Sanford Street in New Brunswick.


Akeem Williams (DOB 1/27/87) was charged on April 6, 2013 with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.


He also was charged with a count of certain persons not to have weapons. The charge was filed after it was determined that Williams previously was convicted in an unrelated case.


His bail has been set at $150,000.


Williams remains at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was taken on April 6, 2013 after he was shot and wounded by New Brunswick police officers.


Following the shooting, the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office immediately took control of the investigation and notified the state Office of the Attorney General in accordance with guidelines governing the use of force by police.


During a preliminary investigation, New Brunswick police reported that several officers shot and wounded Williams on Sanford Street when he fired a weapon he was carrying.
