Ex-housing authority employee jailed for theft

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced today that a former administrative assistant at the Old Bridge Housing Authority has been sentenced to serve 180 days at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center for stealing $2,224 from the authority to pay her rent.

Alyson Rittenhouse (DOB 10/15/73) of South Amboy also was placed on probation for three years and was banned from holding a public job. In addition, she repaid the stolen money on March 8, 2010.

Rittenhouse was sentenced on March 9, 2010, in New Brunswick by Superior Court Judge Frederick P. DeVesa after she pleaded guilty on January 6, 2010, to a count of theft by deception.

She admitted writing a housing authority check for $924 on June 8, 2007, and giving it to her landlord to cover her rent, and admitted writing a second check to the landlord for $1,300 on September 27, 2007.

She pleaded guilty following negotiations with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Brian D. Gillet.

Rittenhouse was charged by Detective Ron Nitto of the Old Bridge Police Department after a review of financial records showed a discrepancy in the use of housing authority funds.
