GOVERNOR’S CRIME PLAN INITIATIVE LEADS
TO
ARRESTS OF GANG MEMBERS / AFFILIATES
CHARGED WITH WEAPONS, DRUGS AND VIOLENT CRIMES
Middlesex County
Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced details of a six (6) month investigation
into criminally-active violent street gangs and gang members / affiliates
operating in Middlesex
County. The investigation
culminated today with the execution of four (4) search warrants and the arrest
of eighteen (18) defendants throughout the County. The investigation was
launched in conjunction with a targeted anti-gang initiative that is part of
Governor Jon S. Corzine’s Strategy for Safe Streets and Neighborhoods, and at
the direction of Attorney General Anne Milgram and Jose Cordero, the Statewide
Director of Gangs, Guns, and Violent Crime Control.
Pursuant to the
Governor’s Crime Plan Initiative, Prosecutor Kaplan established the Middlesex
County Violent Gang Task Force to formulate and execute a short term, high
impact, violent crime investigative initiative.
Participating in
the Task Force and investigation with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office
were law enforcement officers from the following agencies: Middlesex County Sheriff’s Department, Middlesex County Department of
Corrections, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, Carteret Police Department,
Highland Park Police Department, New Brunswick Police Department, North
Brunswick Police Department, Perth Amboy Police Department, Piscataway Police
Department, Sayreville Police Department, South Amboy Police Department, South
Brunswick Police Department, Franklin
Township Police Department, New Jersey State Police, New Jersey State Parole,
Bureau of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Federal Drug
Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The Operation
encompassed three phases: an Intelligence Initiative, an Investigative
Initiative, and Execution / Arrest.
The Intelligence
Initiative included detailed identification of specific violent gangs /
offenders, identifying areas of criminal activity and establishing strategic
target zones, and identifying non-incarcerated violent gang members pending
criminal prosecution.
The
Investigative Initiative utilized various investigative strategies and tactics
including undercover operatives and physical surveillance.
During the
Intelligence and Investigative phases, criminal activity committed by members
of targeted gangs necessitated that Task Force Officers arrest sixty-four (64)
defendants in various jurisdictions in Middlesex
County and the execution of four (4)
search warrants in Perth Amboy, Sayreville,
South Amboy, and South Brunswick. The arrests
and search warrants resulted in the seizure of over ten (10) ounces of cocaine,
eleven (11) ounces of marijuana, eight (8) handguns, two (2) shotguns, one (1)
assault rifle, and forty-three thousand one hundred eighty dollars ($43,180.00)
cash.
The Execution /
Arrest phase, which began October 2, 2008 and ended today, included the
execution of arrest warrants for eighteen (18) additional subjects throughout
the County and four (4) additional search warrants in New Brunswick, North
Brunswick, and Highland Park. These search warrants resulted in the seizure of
ten (10) grams of cocaine and two (2) ounces of marijuana.
The street gangs
targeted and/or encountered during the investigation included several Blood
Sets (Sex Money Murder (SMM), G-Shine, Neighborhood Rollin 20’s (NHB), Bounty
Hunter Bloods (BHB), 9Tek, IMG-464), as well as Latin Kings, Netas, Mara
Salvatrucha (MS-13), Crips, Vatos Locos, 18th Street, La Mugre,
Trinitarios, Dominicans Don’t Play, and A-Set.
The members / affiliates of these gangs have a history of violence and
have been involved individually and / or collectively in criminality including
Murder, Attempted Murder (including drive by shootings), Aggravated Assault,
Armed Robbery, Unlawful Possession of Weapons, and Possession and Distribution
of Controlled Dangerous Substances prior to, or during, this initiative.
Regarding
this initiative, New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram stated: "The Middlesex County
investigation, led by Prosecutor Kaplan, is a significant part of our Statewide strategy to target and take down street gangs
trafficking in illegal drugs and guns. The significant number of gang members
swept up by the County's Violent Crime Task Force is an important step forward
in making our streets and neighborhoods safe from violent criminals.”
Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan stated: “Middlesex County
law enforcement is committed to working together with our communities to ensure
the safest and highest quality of life for our citizens. The violence,
guns and drugs associated with gangs is unacceptable and will continue to be
aggressively investigated and prosecuted.”
The names of those who were
arrested, together with their age, town of residence, gang affiliation and rank
(if any), charges and bail information follows.
As in all cases, these defendants must be presumed innocent at this
stage of the proceedings.
