Juveniles charged with murder

 

 

          Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Acting Chief Robert Bonfante of the Old Bridge Police Department announced that three 17-year-old males have been charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder following the death this morning of a 49-year-old township resident.

 

The three males, all Old Bridge residents, previously had been charged with conspiring to commit an aggravated assault and aggravated assault upon Divyendu Sinha. The homicide charges were filed after Mr. Sinha was pronounced dead at 4 a.m. today at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

 

Mr. Sinha was taken to the hospital after he was beaten shortly before 11:42 p.m. on June 25, 2010, as he was walking with his family on Fela Drive in Old Bridge. No weapons were used in the assault.

 

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed tomorrow by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office.

 

While an investigation into the death remains active, preliminary findings indicate the assault was not racially motivated and that Mr. Sinha was the victim of a random attack. A final determination will not be reached until the investigation is completed.

 

The three juveniles were remanded to the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center in North Brunswick following a preliminary Family Court hearing in New Brunswick this morning before Superior Court Judge Roger W. Daley.

 

The three juveniles are scheduled to return to Family Court on July 1, 2010, for a preliminary hearing on the murder and murder conspiracy charges.

 

Their names are being withheld because of their ages. They were arrested and charged on June 26, 2010.

 

After the investigation is completed, Prosecutor Kaplan will review all reports in the case and will decide whether to seek to try the three in Superior Court as adults.
