Man dies in auto crash in Monroe Township

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan today announced that a 60-year-old Monroe Township man died in a car crash when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree on Federal Road in the township on April 10, 2009.

Melvyn Greenberg (DOB 9/7/48) was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:38 p.m.

A preliminary investigation has determined that Mr. Greenberg, who was driving a 2008 Infinity G37, was traveling westbound on Federal Road when he failed to negotiate a curve to the right, and drove across the road.

The car went through a field, across the front lawn of a private residence at 311 Federal Road, and crashed into the tree at 9:15 p.m. The car subsequently caught fire.

Shortly before the crash, a Monroe Township police officer, on routine patrol, observed the vehicle traveling at what he believed to be in excess of the speed limit and followed the vehicle, but was unable to catch up to the Infinity before it crashed.

The officerís name is being withheld pending completion of the investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed later today. The cause of death was not immediately available.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Investigator Jeffrey Temple, of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Fatal Crash Investigation Unit, at (732) 745-3300.
