Man shot in South River


Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Chief Mark Tinitigan of the South River Police Department announced that a police officer shot and wounded a man who was brandishing a knife early this morning.


The man, whose identity is being withheld, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he is listed in serious but stable condition.


The man, 51, of South River, was shot in the parking lot of the Village Green apartment complex on Johnson Place after residents called police at 3:19 a.m., reporting that a man had threatened them in the parking lot.


When two police officers arrived at the apartment complex, the man confronted them with a knife and was shot by one of the officers.


The officers were not injured. Their identities are being withheld at this time.


No charges have been filed, but an investigation is active and is continuing under the direction of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office, which immediately reported the shooting to the Office of the Attorney General in accordance with state guidelines.
