New Brunswick man arrested and charged in 1990 homicide

††††††††† Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Edison Police Chief Thomas J. Bryan today announced the arrest of a New Brunswick man on charges of fatally stabbing a 15-year-old female in an Edison motel nearly 20 years ago.

††††††††† Steven Parkey Jr. (DOB 8/7/70) of New Brunswick has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the death October 3, 1990, of Nikki Adams, 15, of New Brunswick.

Parkey was arrested on August 25, 2010, following an intensive investigation by Detective John A. Canavera of the Edison Police Department and Investigator Michael Daniewicz and Sgt. Eleazar Ricardo, both of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office.

Prosecutor Kaplan said members of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office routinely review cases where no arrests have been made, and said such a review led to the arrest of Parkey. Prosecutor Kaplan also commended Detective Canavera, Investigator Daniewicz and Sgt. Ricardo for their work.

Parkey, who was a resident of Highland Park at the time of the homicide, was being held on $2 million bail, set by Superior Court Judge Bradley Ferencz, who stipulated the defendant must post the full amount before he can be released from custody.

Parkey is scheduled to appear today at 1:30 p.m. before Superior Court Judge Frederick P. DeVesa at the Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick.

Edison Police were alerted to the homicide at about 12:20 p.m. on October 3, 1990, after a cleaning person discovered the victim in a room at the motel, then known as the Colonial Motel on Route 1 in Edison.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy showed Ms. Adams died from multiple stab wounds.

Anyone with information on the case, or knows Parkey, is asked to call Detective Canavera of the Edison Police Department at (732) 248-7528, or Investigator Daniewicz at (732) 745-4018, or Sgt. Ricardo at (732) 745-8893.
