Old Bridge man charged with homicide

††††††††† Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Chief John Zebrowski of the Sayreville Police Department announced that an Old Bridge man was charged with the murder of a 65-year-old Sayreville resident who was killed in his home this morning.

Robert McGranahan (DOB 1/6/87) of Rellim Drive in Old Bridge also was charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose following the death of Edward Demko Jr., who was found in his home, the apparent victim of a stabbing.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted by the Middlesex County Medical Examinerís Office on March 10, 2013.

Police began an investigation after receiving a call at 2:37 a.m. today and responded to Mr. Demkoís home at 29 Giera Court in Sayreville. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:09 a.m.

At about 4 a.m., McGranahan went to Old Bridge Police headquarters and later was taken to the Sayreville Police Department and was charged with murder.

He is in custody and awaiting bail, which has not been set.

An investigation by Sgt. Thomas Cassidy of the Sayreville Police Department and Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office determined that the defendant and the victim were acquaintances and that the apparent stabbing was not a random act.

The investigation is active and continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Cassidy of the Sayreville Police Department at (732) 525-5427, or Investigator Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office at (732) 745-4471.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, McGranahan is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
