Perth Amboy man charged in sex assaults

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Acting Perth Amboy Police Chief E.J. McDonald today announced that a Perth Amboy man has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a teenage male and attempting to improperly touch another teenage male.

Edwin Soto, (DOB 11/18/54) of 128 State Street, Perth Amboy was arrested at his home on April 30, 2010, and was charged with sexual assault, attempted criminal sexual contact and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Soto is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $100,000 bail. He must post the full amount before he can be released from custody.

Soto was arrested and charged following an investigation by Detective Peter Boulieris of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Investigator James Kelly of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The investigation determined Soto sexually assaulted one of the teenagers on a number of occasions between January 2005, and January 2007, and, in a separate incident, attempted to improperly touch the other teenager on one occasion sometime in January 2009. Most of the incidents occurred at the defendant’s home.

Police began the investigation after one of the teenagers told school officials, who contacted police.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Soto are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
