Police search for assailant

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and New Brunswick Police Director Peter Mangarella today announced police are actively searching for a man who abducted a minor female and sexually assaulted her in the city last week.

Police also developed a sketch of the assailant, who was described as an 18- to 20-year-old Hispanic male, between 5-foot, 4-inches, and 5-foot, 7-inches tall, with short, dark hair, brown eyes and a thin build. He last was seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.

An investigation by Detective Jamaal James of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Melissa Terpanick of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office determined that the female was playing outside her home at the Raritan Crossing apartment complex on Manor Court in New Brunswick at about 6 p.m. on Monday, June 14, 2010, when she was approached by the unidentified man.

He took her to a secluded area near her apartment building and sexually assaulted her before fleeing. He last was seen walking away from the apartment complex and was heading toward Rutgers Village in New Brunswick.

The female, whose age is being withheld to protect her identity, subsequently told her parents, who contacted police.

Anyone with information on the assault, or who may be able to identify the man in the sketch, is asked to call Detective James at (732) 745-5200, or Investigator Terpanick at (732) 745-3600.
