Police shooting under investigation


Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced that police are actively investigating the death of a Perth Amboy man, who was shot when he apparently attacked a city police officer with a knife today.


          Dixon Rodriguez, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, which occurred shortly after police were dispatched to Hall Avenue in Perth Amboy at 1:18 p.m.


A preliminary investigation has shown that two police officers, whose names are being withheld at this time, were speaking to the man when he attacked one of the officers. The man was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m.


The two officers were taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division, were they were being examined. No information was immediately available on the results of the exams, but neither officer was believed to have been seriously injured.


Following the shooting, members of the Perth Amboy Police Department contacted the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office, which subsequently notified the state Office of the Attorney General, in accordance with state guidelines.
