A
jury in Middlesex County deliberated for two hours over two days before finding
Donte Williams (DOB 11/13/87) guilty on May 26, 2010, of aggravated manslaughter in the death of Che
Broadus, 18, of Union Township.
Williams
faces an additional 25 years in a
Williams
previously was convicted and sentenced to 45 years in prison
on May 1, 2006, for aggravated manslaughter, attempted murder, aggravated
assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession without first
having obtained a permit and possession of a defaced firearm.
An
appellate court subsequently overturned the aggravated manslaughter conviction,
but let the remaining counts stand. Williams currently is serving 20 years on
the remaining counts and must serve 85 percent of the term before he can be
eligible for parole. He also will be required to serve 85 percent of the
aggravated manslaughter conviction when he is sentenced on June 25, 2010.
During
the retrial which began on May 11, 2010, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor
Linda Estremera and Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Scott LaMountain
presented evidence and testimony showing that Williams became involved in a
dispute while attending Club Krome, a nightclub in Sayreville, on August 29,
2004.
