Second suspect arrested and charged in New Brunswick homicide

 

 

          Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and New Brunswick Police Director Anthony A. Caputo announced that a second suspect was arrested today on charges of fatally shooting a 30-year-old man in the city on October 23, 2009.

 

Angel Guadalupe (DOB 2/3/80) of Florence, N.J. was arrested shortly after 7 a.m. at an apartment in Trenton. Bail was set at $2 million after he was charged October 30, 2009, with the murder of Anthony Filardi of New Brunswick.

 

Gaudalupe, who was apprehended without incident, also was charged on October 30 with armed robbery, carjacking, unlawful possession of a shotgun and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

 

The defendant was arrested by members of the Fugitive Unit of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and Trenton police following an intensive investigation by Detective Ronoldy Martinez of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Eleazar Ricardo of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

 

The investigation began after New Brunswick police received a 911 call at 5:07 a.m. on October 23, 2009, and found Mr. Filardi on the sidewalk on Lee Avenue, midway between Seaman and Handy streets.

 

He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at 6:34 a.m.

 

The investigation determined that after Mr. Filardi was shot, his car was stolen. The vehicle since has been recovered.

 

Police subsequently arrested and charged Michael J. Mercado (DOB 8/21/81) of May Street, New Brunswick on October 27, 2009. He is being held in lieu of $2.25 million bail on charges of murder, armed robbery, carjacking, unlawful possession of a shotgun and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Guadalupe and Mercado are merely accusations and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
