Teenager remains in custody following juvenile hearing

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced today that 16-year-old Edison teenager has been remanded to the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center following a Family Court hearing on a charge that he possessed a destructive device in his home.

The teenager, whose identity is being withheld because of his age, was held at the detention center on May 1, 2013 and remained there following the hearing today before Superior Court Judge James Hyland.

The judge ruled the teenager will remain in custody until the next court hearing, which was scheduled for May 10, 2013.

The teenager was charged in a juvenile complaint on April 28, 2013 with possession of a destructive device. The charge would be considered a third degree offense if the teenager were an adult.

Based on a preliminary investigation by the Edison Police Department and a review by the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office, it has been determined that there is no evidence at this time to warrant the filing of additional or more serious charges against the teenager.

Additionally, the investigation has determined that as of today, there is no evidence linking this defendant to threats made against Edison High School.

The investigation into those threats is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office at (732) 745-3300, or the Edison Police Department at (732) 248-7400.
