Three Edison police officers charged

††††††††† Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Thomas Bryan of the Edison Police Department announced that three Edison police officers were charged today with planning to retaliate against a North Brunswick police officer who had arrested another individual on a drunk-driving charge.

Michael A. Dotro, 36, of Manalapan, and Victor E. Aravena, 42, and William H. Gesell, 45, both of Edison, were charged with a fourth degree count of conspiring to retaliate against the North Brunswick officer for performing an official act.

In addition, Gesell was charged with unlawfully accessing a police computer data base, a third degree offense, to gather information on the North Brunswick officer.

Each of the three Edison officers was released on his own recognizance after being served with a criminal complaint at the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office in New Brunswick.

The charges were filed after Investigator Donald Heck of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office determined that the three defendants conspired between February 1, 2012 and April 11, 2012 to retaliate against the North Brunswick officer after he arrested an associate of Dotro on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Dotro subsequently conspired with Aravena and Gesell to find ways to retaliate against the North Brunswick officer. No actual retaliation was ever undertaken, however.

The identities of the individual charged with DWI, and the North Brunswick police officer will not be disclosed at this time.

The investigation is active and is continuing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Heck of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office at (732) 745-8848.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Dotro, Aravena and Gesell are merely accusations and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
