Two men indicted on fatal stabbing charges

 

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced that a Middlesex County grand jury indicted two men today on charges of fatally stabbing a New Brunswick man and wounding the victim’s friend during a dispute at a house party in the city last year.

Eujevel Lopez (DOB 10/23/89) of New Brunswick and Yonathan Marte (DOB 12/15/89) of Philadelphia, Pa. were charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose.

Following a presentation to the grand jury by Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Neil Casey, the panel charged the two defendants with fatally stabbing Luilly Hernandez, 21, and slashing Anthony Cedano, (DOB 8/19/85) also of New Brunswick, on November 30, 2008.

Detective Dave Smith of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined the two victims were attending the house party at 274 George Street when the dispute began.

The argument continued on the street, where Lopez and Marte each stabbed Hernandez multiple times and slashed Cedano when he tried to intervene. Hernandez was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:01 a.m. Cedano was treated for wounds to his head and left forearm and was released.

The defendants remain in custody at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Facility. If convicted, they each face up to life plus five years in a New Jersey state prison.

As is the case for all criminal defendants, the charges against Lopez and Marte are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
