Somerset man arrested on sex assault charges

 

 

          Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and New Brunswick Police Director Anthony Caputo announced that a Franklin Township man was arrested today and charged with sexually assaulting two women in separate incidents.

 

Darryl D. Beckett, (DOB 12/20/70) of the Somerset section of Franklin Township, was arrested at 1:30 a.m. at a residence in the township.

 

He was charged with the sexual assault of a 25-year-old woman in New Brunswick on May 27, 2009, and was charged with the kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault of a 20-year-old woman in New Brunswick on June 5, 2009.

 

          Beckett was arrested after the victims provided information that helped Detective Karla Chendak and Detective Joe Nieves, both of the New Brunswick Police Department, and Investigator Raj Chopra, of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, identify him.

 

          Beckett is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center and is waiting for bail to be set.

 

          In the incident on May 27, 2009, Beckett, who was driving an older-model gold Toyota Camry, approached the 25-year-old woman, who thought she knew Beckett and got into his car on Commercial Avenue in New Brunswick.

 

Beckett drove the woman to a secluded area off of Joyce Kilmer Avenue and sexually assaulted her during the early morning hours.

 

In the June 5, 2009, incident, Beckett, driving the Toyota Camry, approached the 20-year-old woman during the early morning hours and punched her in the face when she refused to get into his car.

 

He drove the victim to the same location off of Joyce Kilmer area and sexually assaulted her.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Beckett are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
